About Us (ENVIS Centre):
ENVIS RESOURCE PARTNER now renamed as Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) on Environmental Biotechnology earlier situated in Department of Environmenal Science, now the centre shifted to S.N.Bose Innovation Building, University of Kalyani.
ENVIS Centre on Environmental Biotechnology in The University of Kalyani, Nadia, is funded by the Ministry of Environmental,Forest & Climate Change, Government of India is meeting the task of disseminating information on various Environment related subject area. But with the emergence of the new field viz., 'Environmental Biotechnology' which plays a paramount role in environmental management has not been covered in the network.
With the emphasis on the management of natural resources and abatement of pollution as well as hazardous waste management, it is therefore proposed to set up an ENVIS Centre on ‘Environmental Biotechnology’. Major emphasis of databank will focus on ‘Pollutant Biodegradation’ and its allied aspect.
In the year 1960, through the WB legislative assembly the University of Kalyani was established as a leading centre of learning of higher education. The university was originally conceived for agricultural studies and at later stage science, commerce, social science, physical education, humanities and engineering and management were introduced for promoting other academic pursuit.
There are 23 Departments offering M. Sc., and Ph.D. programs in regular basis. The university is obtained accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), in January 2001, the University of Kalyani is an affiliating University with 36 affiliated degree colleges situated in two districts of Nadia and Murshidabad of West Bengal. The science Depts. of the University are as follows:
Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Computer science, Microbiology, Biotechnology & Molecular Biology, Instrumentation, Physiology and Statistics.
Professor (Dr.) Amalendu Bhunia
Vice-Chancellor, University of Kalyani
About the Dept: (Department of Environmental Science)
The Department of Environmental Science was established in 1985. The Department of Environmental Science was created from the school since 1998. Initially the school functions as research unit and then teaching was started since 1990-91, academic session as ‘M.Phil in Ecology’. In 1998 July, the Department of Environmental science started M.Sc programme. At present the department offers PhD , M.Sc degree in Environmental Science. The department has permanent faculty members and several visiting faculty and seven office staff. The major research area are basic and applied ecology, pollution biology, environmental impact assessment, microbiology, Bioinorganic and Environmental chemistry, bioremediation, landscape ecology, geomorphology, remote sensing, resource studies, atmospheric science, environmental toxicology and immunology.

The Achievements:
We established links with different national & international research institutes related to environmental biotechnology.
We published twenty-seven newsletters and twenty-seven volumes of abstracts.
The design of our web site www.kuenbiotech.org has been modified by adding hyperlinks for easier access to different web sites .
Further modifications to our web site www.deskuenvis.nic.in, www.kuenvbiotech.org were carried out according to the instructions of the ENVIS secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, New Delhi.
Identification of information/data gaps in the web site was carried out and suitable corrective action was undertaken to fill these gaps, namely:
Emphasis is being given in creating a database on items of news related to Environmental Biotechnology in the ENVIS Newsletter from the 4th volume onwards.
At present we have a collection of more than 10000 abstracts on Environmental Biotechnology .
We have established linkages with Government, academic, non-governmental organizations and with all the ENVIS Centres in India.
We have now more linkages with information sources and are increasing the information content of our web site and our newsletters.
We always supply information on the received queries to individuals, students, scientific institutions, research scientists, Central and State government Departments & Organizations. We are also sending abstracts, research papers and reports as newsletters to different organizations by email, by post or in person.
The Future Plans:
-
This Centre will increase its web site linkages with information sources in the country & abroad for increasing the information content.
-
The Centre will supply more reports, documents, abstracts & research papers.
-
We intend to build up a strong inventory of information related to environmental biotechnology.
-
We intend to create a strong data bank on Environmental Biotechnology.
-
We intend to tie up with different industries to solve the industrial problems on waste products by replacing dirty manufacturing process with clear biochemical strategies.
-
We shall supply information on cleaner technology available and can assist in setting up turn-key projects for waste disposal.
-
Hazardous & toxic waste management update information will be supplied to the relevant industrial level.
-
We hope to take an active part in analysis and framing of future environmental policy
