ENVIS centre has organized a seminar cum workshop on the topic of Chronic Arsenicosis- a public health concern in West Bengal.
This seminar mainly emphasized on mitigation of Arsenic problem in West Bengal with special importance on bioremediation aspect of Arsenic mitigation. In the seminar national and international experts came to deliver lectures on different aspects of bioremediation. |

1. The Centre organized a workshop on Environmental Biotechnology in 21st March 2003; a total of 21 participants took part in the workshop. Dr. A. K. Sanyal, on behalf of the ENVIS Centre, Zoological Survey of India , Kolkata also attended as an observer. Lectures were delivered by different resource persons from different Universities and Research Institutions of West Bengal.
Some of the lectures were as follows:
- Environmental Biotechnology: Progress & Constraints- Prof. K. R. Samaddar
- Biotransformation: A Useful tool for design & detoxification of organic molecules by microbes- Prof. Timir B Samanta
- Bioremediation of Chromium Pollutants- Prof. A. K. Paul
- An investigation on the effect of some heavy metals in Pisum sativum in invitro condition.- Prof. P. D. Ghosh
- A novel technology of composting of rural and urban wastes by two step fermentation system - Prof. N. B. Sinha
All the participants and resource persons made an interactive seminar for better linkages of research in Environmental Biotechnology.
2. Workshop on 'Modern Biochemical Techniques in Environmental Biotechnology' held on Friday, 4th June, 2004. Students/research scholars/faculties of the different Universities/Institutions were participated in the workshop.
3. Two days of seminar cum workshop on Industry-Institute Partnership and Environment Protection was held on 9-10 January, 2006 in University of Kalyani jointly organized by Department of Environmental Science and Department of Chemistry, University of Kalyani. Supported by ENVIS Centre on Environmental Biotechnology. Dr P. K. Padmanavan was the Chief Guest of this workshop programme and our Vice Chancellor Prof. A. K. Das was presided over the seminar programme. Participants from University, Academics, and Industries participated in the programme and successful interactions have been made.

7. An interactive workshop on "Food security, GM crops, GMO and Biosafety Issues" was organized by ENVIS Centre on Environmental Biotechnology, University of Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal on March 19th, 2013. Three eminent experts - Dr. A. K Sanyal, Chairman, West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Kolkata, Prof. Ratan Gachhui, Department of Biotechnology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata 700 032 and Prof. Parthadeb Ghosh, Department of Botany, University of Kalyani, presented lectures in the workshop & interacted with the participants. | |
8. A Seminar lecture cum discussion was held at the ENVIS Centre on December 12, 2013 on Bioremediation and Biodegradation aspects. An international expert Mr. Santanu Mukherjee of Agrosphere Institute, Germany delivered the lecture on the above topic. All ENVIS staffs and research scholars of environmental biology group attained the seminar. | |
9. A Seminar lecture cum discussion was held in the ENVIS Centre on January 2nd, 2014 on Urban Water Scarcity, Climate Change, Water Recycling, Energy and Greenhouse Emissions. An international expert Mr. Debashis Raha is a Board Member of the Minister for Environment and Climate Changes Technical Panel. He has two and half decades of experience in water, petroleum, chemical, environment, energy, greenhouse, regulatory compliance management and education with large corporations and universities in Australia was delivered the lecture & interacted with the participants | |
10. The Centre organized a workshop on “Agrobiotechnology Promotion: Prospects and Constraints” held at USHA GRAM TRUST, Birnagar, Nadia on 10th January 2015. The Workshop was inaugurated by the President of USHA GRAM TRUST. Prof S.C Santra (ENVIS Coordinators) gives the welcome address and brief Introduction about ENVIS and objective of the Workshop. A total of 23 lead farmer participants took part in the workshop. Two eminent experts- Prof. S. Mukharjee, Department of Microbiology, University of Kalyani, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal gave a lecture on biocompost, biofertilizer and about the health concerned and Dr. P. Roy, Ex-Director of National Museum of Natural History, Bhubaneswar presented lectures on earthworm identification, classification and vermicompost. ENVIS Programme officer (Dr Anusaya Mallick) also gives a lecture on Preparation and application of vermicompost. | |
After a day long discussion and deliberations the following observations were made - Preparation and application of Biocompost and Vermicompost in agriculture are increasing with time, the organic farming is yet be established as an effective technology; Farmers need proper training of application of Biocompost and Vermicompost in agriculture. Interaction and feedback session was done by eminent experts, ENVIS Coordinators and staffs. President and Secretary of USHA GRAM TRUST, Birnagar distributed the Certificates among the participants. 11. A seminar cum awareness programme was organized related to the theme of World Environment Day 2016. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor presided the seminar. Head of the Department of Environmental Science. Prof. D Das delivered the welcome address. The chief guest and speaker Dr. A. K. Sanyal, Chirman, West Bengal Biodiversity Board and Ex-Director of ZSI, delivered the speech on the theme “Illegal Trading of Wildlife”. | |
More than 75 participants of student, research scholars, faculties and staff members were present in the seminar. Dr. S. Mukharjee, faculty member has presented the memento to the chief guest. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Prof. R. Bhattacharya, senior faculty member of Environmental Science Department. ENVIS staffs displayed the ENVIS activities through posters and publications. | |
AWARENESS PROGRAMEE ON ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AT SPRINGDALE HIGH SCHOOL, KALYANI, NADIA
The Centre was organized an awareness programme on “ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY” held at Springdale high school, Kalyani, Nadia on 20th September 2016. Prof S.C Santra (ENVIS Coordinators) gave an interactive lecturer on application of environmental biotechnology and their related issues with case studies. A total of sixty eight students of class XI were participated in this programme. |

Celebration of World Environment Day: 5th June, 2017 The World Environmental Day was celebrated on 5th June, 217 in the University. The UNEP theme for WED - 2017 is ‘Connecting People to Nature’. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr.) Sankar Kumar Ghosh inaugurated the world Environment Day by planting a tree sapling. Hon’ble Registrar of the University also planting the tree sapling in the program. Head of the Department, Department of Environmental Science, ENVIS Co-ordinator, staffs, faculty members, research scholars and students were participated in the programme. |

3. Workshop on Strategies and Implementation Mechanisms for ENVIS Wide Area Network Programme held on 8th - 10th July 2002, Visakhapatnam. The proposed workshop would discuss the strategies, guidelines and operational procedure to be adopted for the ENVIS EMCBTAP network.
An attempt is made to provide the documentation for an appreciation of the status of work in various ENVIS Centres distributed all over the country, the background information for arriving at the requirements of ENVIS Programme to meet the need of standardized data collation and preparation of State of Environment Report and the strategies to be adopted utilizing web. The backdrop of World Summit on Sustainable development is also taken into consideration.

ENVIS centre on Environmental Biotechnology, University of Kalyani participates in National Workshop on "Summary Evaluation of ENVIS Centres and Roll out of the revamped ENVIS Scheme", at Ahmedabad, Gujarat from 17-18th Mach, 2017. Pro. Debasish Das (C/I), Dr Anusaya Mallick (Programme Officer) and Mr. Sourav Banerjee (Information Officer) represented our centre in the two-day national evaluation workshop on Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre. The workshop aimed at assessing the capability and activities carried out in 69 ENVIS centers across the country.
Prof. Debasish Das, gave presentation on the status of ENVIS Centre, its activities and future plans in next three years.
During the workshop, two Anroid mobile Apps (Biocontrol of Pest and Waste to Wealth) ware released by secretary Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt of India Ajay Narayan Jha in presence of addnl. chief secretary, Forests & Environment, Govt. of Gujarat Arvind Agrawal and Sr. Economic Advisor MoEF & CC Anandi Subramaniam.
18. Workshop-cum-training programme: The staffs (Professor Debasish Das, Coordinator (I/C), Mrs. Anusaya Mallick, Program Officer and Mr. Sourov Banerjee, Information Officer) of ENVIS Centre participated in the Workshop-cum-training programme on GIS/Geo-mapping on 21-23 September, 2017 at Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG), Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Display of ENVIS Activities at Kalyani Junction Rly Station during exhibition on Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAC) from 3-5 May, 2017: The ENVIS centre on Environmental Biotechnology, Department of Environmental Science, University of Kalyani participated in the exhibition of Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAC), held at Kalyani (Main) Rly Station, West Bengal from 3-5 May, 2017. During the visit of Science Express Climate Action Special we have displayed activities of our ENVIS centre to the school children, research students, academicians and interested public those visited our stall. We demonstrate our centre’s activity and also distributed the news letter/handout and books etc. We are interacted with the staffs of science express and gave some ENVIS materials.
